Simone McLeod
Simone is a Cree_Ojibway, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1962 and a member of the James Smith Cree Nation in Saskatchewan. While artistically motivated and experimenting since age thirteen, she did not pursue painting until later in life.
"I really believed that I had to wait until I could find something that had a lot of meaning to me. Each painting contains a piece of my soul. I have a strong faith in humankind and my paintings are silent prayers of hope for the future....
"My Indian name is Earth Blanket (all that covers the earth such as grass, flowers and trees.) The sun, the blankets and the flowers/rocks are all the same colours to show how all things are equal."
Simone's work is internationally collected throughout Europe, India, Asia ,South Africa, New Zealand among other countries.
SYMBOLISM
THE SUN: Symbolic of the Creator, God, (a person of higher beliefs.) It provides life to all things.
THE BLANKET PEOPLE: Are made up of blankets, which cover them completely creating a sense of mystery.
THE FLOWERS (on large pieces only): Represent the Earth and are sometimes held by the people to show appreciation for Mother Earth's gifts.
THE ROCKS (on canvas pieces only): Also represent Mother Earth. The rocks are harder and stronger than the flowers and are symbolic of the strong foundation upon which some relationships are based. |
