Doug Smart
Doug was raised in southern Saskatchewan, spending many of his days roaming the hills of his grandparents' ranch situated in the South Saskatchewan River Valley. It was here that he developed his deep interest and appreciation for nature and the environment.
Doug went on to obtain his B.Sc and his B.Ed at the University of Alberta while continuing to pursue his interest in art through classes in oil painting. Although his challenging career of teaching high school biology for 30 years left him with little time to continue his interests in art, he satisfied his creative passions by designing furniture, homes, natural landscapes and restoring antique cars by fabricating non-existent parts out of wood and metal.
With more time available to him now, he has the freedom to pursue his creative endeavors in art. His fascination is now with metal and stone because of their strength and presence. He draws his inspirations for his work from history, nature and music. Working with alabaster, surpentine, chlorite, marble, wonderstone and soapstone, Doug likes to prefinish each stone and to discover its uniqueness before developing a design. Features such as grain, color and texture are then utilized through direct sculpture in the round, utilizing light, volume and proportion to create an original image.
Doug currently lives with his wife and 2 children and works out of his studio on an acreage east of St. Albert. Many of his current pieces can be viewed at the Art Beat Gallery located in St. Albert, Alberta, and at the Quarry gallery in the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Jasper, Alberta, Canada. |
