Tinyan Chan
Born into a family of artists in China, Tinyan Chan was encouraged and instructed by his elder brother, a famous portrait painter in Hong Kong. By the age of sixteen, Tinyan had successfully obtained admission to the Mid-southern China Academy of Fine Arts. He would perfect his techniques at the academy and by nineteen years old, he was accepted into the Canton Academy of Fine Arts. Soon after, Tinyan moved to Hong Kong, exhibiting at the Konn Gallery. He believed that he needed international experience to enrich his imagination. In the early 1960s, he accepted a position as chief designer for the United Nigeria Textile Company in Nigeria. In this setting, he created designs to be developed for clothing all over the world; this gave him a taste of what it was like to be an artist outside of China. After working two years there, he left to hone his painting skills at the prestigious L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a move he credits as a primary factor in the development of his art. He discovered what was to become the turning point of his life: the works of European masters Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh. In them, Tinyan found a release for his soul… color and expression. From his fine detailed floral still-lifes and majestic harbor scenes, to his expansive landscapes, one can see the way his strong strokes and bold bursts of color capture the drama of nature and everyday life.
A resident of Canada for over 40 years, he established himself as one of the leading artist in the country. His travels throughout the world have added inspiration to his beautiful paintings. He has won numerous International Art Awards. In 1983, in recognition of his art and his contribution to the community, Tinyan was elected to senior membership in the Federation of Canadian Artists (S.F.C.A.) -- one of only 60 currently in the organization. He has hosted numerous sold-out solo shows in Canada and the United States. His paintings reside in numerous public and private collections around the world.
